Being present in the beauty of nature, its color, light, and texture, I experience quiet humility and a sense of well-being. In my teaching and fine art, I hope to inspire and connect with others in this special place.
I chose silk painting for my journey because of the flexibility inherent in the fiber arts and my love of watercolor paintings. Silk painting techniques and effects are very much like those in watercolor painting. Because of silk's luminance and flexibility, there is ample opportunity to wander to my heart's content - taking side-trips for play, discovery and new means of expression.
For fine art, I specialize in silk painting, free-motion quilting and machine-embroidered thread work. My pieces often incorporate collage and quilting. I have recently begun a series of digital silk pieces featuring scenes from local nature areas.
I earned my Masters degree from Eastern Michigan University in textile arts. However, self-guided study and hours of experimentation and visual immersion in nature have provided most of my training. Since 2004, I have been a guest faculty member in North Carolina at the John C. Campbell Folk School. I have displayed my work at juried local, regional and national fine art and fiber arts venues. However, my biggest honor so far came when I received an award in landscape painting at the Fourth International Silk Painting Congress in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
